Question:
What are club volleyball tryouts like?
I'm in 8th Grade and considering club volleyball since I've been playing for my school for two years now.
I just would like some tips on how to succeed in tryouts and get on the best team.
My main concern is how do tryouts work? Do all of the people tryout together or is it just individual tryouts?
Answer:
The best clubs will have most of their players picked before tryouts. Club volleyball has become really competitive now so players are recruited before tryouts. The best teams may only be needing to fill in one or two spots and so it may be tough to make those teams.
Definitely go to open gyms before the tryouts. You want the coaches to become familiar with you before tryouts if possible.
Often coaches get a real good idea of what players to pick at tryouts from seeing them at the open gyms.
Again, the best teams have all their spots filled before tryouts.
Here are some tips to succeed at tryouts.
1. Wear something that stands out so you'll be noticed and remembered.
2. Play hard. Coaches want players that are really passionate about volleyball. If you play hard all the time and the coaches see that you will constantly put forth the effort, then you'll more likely be picked.
3. Don't get frustrated and always do what the coaches say with enthusiasm.
4. Get there early, warm up, and act like you want to be there. You don't want to just sit their and look like you're not excited to play volleyball.
5. Be friendly with everyone and don't get stressed out. Really try to enjoy yourself. It's important you get along with other players. Coaches don't want to get stuck with a bad apple so be sure to come off as a kid that's going to get along with everyone.
6. How you react to things is really important. Coaches want to see players have a positive attitude and really take chances and go for it.
